When is a sound meter needed?
By its very nature, you need a sound meter, also known as a noise meter, when you need to measure the sound or noise level at a given location. There can be several reasons for this, and each reason requires its own sound meter. With us, you can also find a noise meter that is applicable in various situations.
Sound is measured through the unit decibel, and that is why this level is what your measurements identify when you use your sound meter. In our range, you will find equipment for many scenarios. For example, choose a noise meter that can:
- Be used by ventilation companies to measure noise levels on ventilation and air conditioning systems
- Conduct relevant workplace measurements such as the noise level in office environments
- Measure noise levels in production departments

Do you need to measure indoors or outdoors? You will find the perfect sound meter here on the page. There may indeed be a need for a sound meter to determine the noise level both outside and inside. At Buhl & Bønsøe, we naturally sell a noise and sound meter for both purposes.
Use a digital sound meter/decibel meter correctly
There are several things you should be aware of and probably want to know when you are looking for a sound meter. Therefore, at Buhl & Bønsøe, we offer a wide range of equipment, where each product is of high quality.
With our selection of digital sound meters/decibel meters, you can thus very likely find the perfect measuring instrument for high-precision sound measurements with accurate results - and thereby find the best solution to noise problems.
Before you dive into using your sound meter, however, there are four facts about sound that you should know, which will prepare you to use your sound meter/decibel meter so that you get the most out of it. Read our short guide below:
What are sound waves?
Sound waves are longitudinal waves that spread from the sound source in the form of shock waves in solid masses, liquids, and gases. The human ear can hear frequencies from 16 to 20,000 Hertz. Lower and higher frequencies are usually not registered by a sound meter.
How important is the sound source?
A too high noise level negatively affects a person's well-being, regardless of the sound source it originates from: Machines, equipment, or voices - the sound meter does not distinguish. Ultimately, a too high noise level can be very harmful to health.
What is the limit value for decibels?
- At the top of the list of work-related injuries is hearing loss. By monitoring the limit values with a sound meter, you can avoid a number of work-related injuries. But what is the limit value for decibels? It is recommended that it does not exceed 55 to 85 decibels.
The limit value varies depending on where the measurement is taken: If your sound meter/decibel meter shows 70 decibels in a machine factory, this value is the minimum limit. However, if measured in an open office landscape, the alarm will sound, as 70 dB is extremely high. Here, the recommended decibel level would be 55.
Where should the measurement be taken?
Finally, you should know that the possibilities for using a sound meter are countless. At Buhl & Bønsøe, we are well acquainted with them all, so please feel free to contact us if you need further clarification. We have gathered a number of examples here:
- Measuring noise in heat burners
- Measuring machine noise in trade and industry
- Measuring sound levels during events
- Control of compressed air pumps
- In residential areas, caretakers can perform the most important sound measurements with a simple sound meter
Within our range, we distinguish between a basic sound meter and a professional sound meter. Each of these can indeed do something different. You can read much more about sound meters/decibel meters, and what they can do here.
