Get the most out of a thermal camera

Thermography and a thermal camera are, in most people's eyes, something used to thermograph houses. This is also the most common application of thermal cameras. What most craftsmen overlook is that a thermographic camera can also be used for leak detection. It saves an incredible amount of time to be able to turn on your thermal camera, point it down at the floor, and say, “There is your pipe break.” Instead of having to tear up an entire floor before finding the leak. This is also something the customer will appreciate.

Thermography - precise thermography of houses

Thermography consists of 10% pointing your thermographic camera at what you want to thermograph and 90% analyzing your thermographic images. Therefore, it is crucial that the thermography software is good and intuitive.

We provide thermography software in Danish, just as the language in our thermographic cameras is Danish. The built-in report generator (Testo 890) makes it easy to create energy reports on-site without having to round the office first. For thermography of houses, we recommend Testo 875 or higher, but have a chat with our product specialists.

Thermal camera with app

Testo's new series of thermographic cameras is equipped with an app for thermography. This means that you can calmly read the results in real-time on the app while you or a partner thermograph. You can also stream your thermographic recordings in real-time to a phone or tablet. This feature can be used if you need to demonstrate completed work or provide a quote to a group of people. You can quickly document cold bridges, missing insulation, or areas at risk of moisture formation in real-time. For the first time ever, you can operate a thermal camera with your iPhone. It doesn't get easier when you need to work with a thermal camera. 

Thermography of HPFI systems and electrical panels

In addition to being able to thermograph houses, you can also, with the more advanced IR infrared cameras, find faults in electrical panels by thermographing the panel. This requires a thermographic camera with high resolution to accurately determine which wire in the electrical panel is defective and poses a potential fire hazard. It is a one-time investment that quickly pays off again in the time saved with the voltmeter. A thermal camera can save you a lot of troubleshooting.

Detect wear on industrial machines with a thermal camera

A completely fourth application of a thermal camera is to detect potential problem areas on contact surfaces in large machinery; by observing the heat pattern on the machinery, you can discover uneven wear and thus see if something is running skewed or needs to be replaced.

Thermal camera with moisture sensor

The latest thermal cameras have a built-in moisture sensor. This means that you can directly see problem areas affected by moisture in the image on the infrared camera's display. This feature can save a lot of time when creating building reports. Normally, risk areas with moisture formation can only be detected using the accompanying Danish software, that is, when you are back at the office analyzing the infrared images. With, for example, Testo 890, you can detect moisture onsite without having to drive out again.

Frequently asked questions about thermal cameras:

• Can thermography be performed on all houses? Answer: Yes, all houses can be thermographed; you can even have a thermal survey performed with a thermographic camera in an apartment if you wish. Normally, year-round homes or summer houses are examined with thermography to find cold bridges, missing insulation, and more.
• Can I buy a thermographic camera for under 10,000 DKK? Answer: At Buhl & Bønsøe, we have thermal cameras from around 8,000 kroner up to 125,000 kroner for the large high-end models, where you can perform thermography with an app, live stream thermography, video record a thermography, and more.
• What does thermography cost? Answer: The price of thermography is an area with large differences. Depending on your geographical location, the size of the property, the number of energy technicians available, etc. A good rule of thumb is that for a typical single-family house, thermography costs from 5,000 kroner up to 12,000 kroner plus VAT. The expense of having a trained thermographer walk around the house with their thermographic camera is usually quickly recouped if the improvements recommended by the thermographer are made.
• Is the thermography software free? Answer: If you purchase an IR camera from Testo, free software for thermography is included; this software allows you to easily create a report with photos and explanatory text in PDF format. The image processing is very intuitive and easy, and everything is easily compiled into a PDF, including your explanatory notes in a complete thermography report.
• When can thermography be performed? Answer: You can thermograph year-round as long as there is a temperature difference inside and outside of over 12 degrees Celsius. Thermography works best in overcast weather without direct sunlight on the property. The latest thermographic cameras from Testo are so sensitive that this temperature difference does not need to be that large. You can thus extend the season for thermography and offer your customers a complete thermography report at times when competitors are waiting for cold weather. 
• Is thermography from the outside enough? Answer: The optimal thermography is performed by taking thermal images both from the inside and outside. You can better detect cold bridges from the inside, but then you do not get infrared images of the house's foundation and roof ridge.
