What is a buffer?

A buffer solution, commonly referred to simply as a 'buffer', is a solution used to regulate pH value. This can also be called a 'puffer' or a 'cushion'; a beloved child has many names. A buffer is, in its simplest form, a mixture that usually consists of an acid and its so-called corresponding base.

The pH value represents the acidity level in a given aqueous solution. More specifically, the pH value is the numerical value of the represented hydrogen concentration in a solution - measured in the unit moles per liter. The term pH is a contraction of the abbreviation for 'potency', p, and 'Hydrogen', H. When measuring pH value, the solution can be classified as an acid, a base, or a neutral solution based on the result.

How is buffer solution used?
