What is a dosimeter?
A dosimeter can mean several things. It is often associated with ionizing radiation and radioactive radiation. Indeed, a dosimeter can measure the amount of ionizing radiation a person has been exposed to. However, a noise dosimeter is a slightly different matter.
A noise dosimeter is an almost indispensable tool for risk assessments in workplaces where employees are exposed to noise. A dosimeter that measures noise shows how high the noise exposure your employees are subjected to in their daily work.
This means that a noise dosimeter does not measure radioactive substances, but the received dose of sound waves. At Buhl & Bønsøe, we offer several good models. For example, the manufacturer Casella, known for producing high-quality measuring instruments, has a series of professional sound level meters called dBadge2.

Casella's dBadge2 series includes three different measuring instruments: dBadge2, dBadge 2 Plus, and dBadge 2 Pro, meaning you can get exactly the noise dosimeter that fits your measurement needs.
Common to all models in the dBadge2 series is that they are easy to use, highly accurate, and have the capability to communicate wirelessly with the accompanying app, which works on both smartphones and tablets.
How do you perform noise measurement?
On the website of the Danish Working Environment Authority, you can find precise instructions on how to use a noise dosimeter. Additionally, a manual for dBadge2 is included, where you can find information about the optimal settings. We are also happy to assist with the operation and setup of all the measuring instruments we sell if you have any questions. Contact us, if you have inquiries.
When choosing your dosimeter, it is beneficial to keep the guidelines from the Danish Working Environment Authority in mind. Here it states, “A sound level meter should have the setting option “peak,” and the instrument must be able to measure accurately - especially when it comes to impulse noise. The sound level meter should meet the requirements for class 2 instruments in the international standard IEC 61672-1 sound level meters.” The Casella dBadge 2 series naturally meets these requirements.
Sound pressure, or noise level (LP), can be read directly on your dosimeter and depends among other things on frequency and filter on the sound level meter. Noise exposure of a person is indicated by the energy-equivalent A-weighted sound pressure level in the workplace for an eight-hour workday in dB(A), denoted LAeq (8 hours). Impulse correction should be made if necessary.
